Our apartment is in the resort of Calan Porter, which is home to one of the prettiest and safest beaches on the Island. It offers a sheltered bay of beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters that gently shelve. Evening entertainment is centred on a few pavement cafes, local restaurants with most tastes catered for, as well as those that serve the tempting Mediterranean dishes including Spanish Tapas. For those looking for a more lively evening, there are professional acts, live music and dancing a couple of times a week you will also find karaoke and family quizzes.
We have a few places within a 5/10 minute walk of our apartment not to be missed when staying in Cala’n Porter. One is the famous Caves of Xoroi which are carved into the rugged rock face, overlooking the sea, during the daytime this is paradise and is a beautiful place, to have a drink and waste away a few hours relaxing and taking in the wonderful views, if you stay long enough you can watch the most spectacular sun sets, if that is not enough in the evenings the Caves of Xoroi turns into a disco/nightclub ideal for the young and energetic.
The other is a rugged walk to Cales Coves it’s a journey for the adventurous! Cales Coves features over 100 Bronze Age caves ( which were inhabited by latter day hippies) carved into the cliff looking out to a sheltered bay. Cave painting and carvings are all to be found in this fascinating area, It’s a chance to tap history and beauty in one breathtaking location. The track way is fully cleared and marked with post’s of the Cami de Cavalls situated every 200 yards or so. It should take no more than thirty minutes to reach.
Cala’n Porter is a great location to explore the rest of this beautiful Island and there is a regular bus service from Cala’n Porter to Mahon the capital which boasts an impressive port & harbour with an array of cafés and restaurants around the bay. With Menorca’s unhurried pace of life you can enjoy leisurely days on beautiful beaches, These range from tiny unspoilt coves, to long stretches of golden sand. You can still find, picturesque resorts and small fishing villages that still remain unfazed and un spoilt by its popularity although the island boasts many attractions beauty and tranquillity are its characteristic attributes.
Cala’n Porter beach is just a short stroll away and can be reached by steps or a steep hill. You can drive down as there is a free car park. There is also a mini train that runs around the resort. The beach is beautiful with white sand and crystal clear sea, ideal for swimming and snokelling. You can hire sunbeds, parasols and pedaloes. There is a bar, restaurant and shop. There is also a children’s play area on the beach.
Mahon airport is about 10 – 15 mins away. You can get a taxi from the airport which will cost around 20 euros or you can have a hire car waiting for you. Car hire is not essential as Cala’n Porter has everything you could want but we would recommend that you hire one for a few days as the Island is so beautiful and well worth seeing.
